Small Arms Dealer - Patron Saint of Disappointment
Small Arms Dealer firmly believes that punk rock played with a raging fire in the belly is the very best kind of punk rock...easily digestible in large, combustible doses but guaranteed to leave you with that permanent, ever-so-worth-it feeling. And there's no indication that any member of this Long Island quintet is holding back one iota, writing songs that sound just as urgent and ferocious on their hundredth spin as they did on their first. Their sophomore full-length, Patron Saint of Disappointment, delivers sweat-drenched, clobbered in the face, punched in the gut, smacked in the ears, pissed off punk rock from a battle-wary crew including Jason Lubrano...who is in top cynical form, spitting lyrical venom in the collective faces of religion, politics, corporate America and even himself. Never before has a vocalist churned out such beautiful poetic poison...all with a mischievous smirk and a wink of the eye. The band echoes his war cries with gruff, throaty sing-along chants, guitars exploding with TNT force and a rhythm section pounding out just the right amount of octane. If there's any band that's going to be left standing after the apocalypse, it's gonna be Small Arms Dealer. There's more than enough guns-a-blazin' firepower, unforgettable melodies and devil-may-care attitude to handle four little ol' horsemen. This is one certifiably kick-ass record.

Saw them live yesterday, it was great as always!!! Saw them a couple of times in the last ten years, but it never gets boring!!!
Stolen Bikes Ride Faster - Nothing Has Changed
Somewhere in Italy, inbetween Dag Nasty's guitarwork and Lifetimes energy and vocal prowess lies Stolen Bikes Ride Faster. 6 songs of purely awesome, deep, but FUN melodic hardcore are yours for the taking right here. From the very Young Loud and Scotty'ish "They've Drawn a Strip", to the very Against Me acoustic outro of "Black Lungs, Pink Eyes and Puddles", this ep goes by fast. Almost too fast. I WANT MORE!
Fucked Up - Year Of The Pig
Toronto’s FUCKED UP tore asunder the bonds of hardcore punk with last year’s limited-edition 12” YEAR OF THE PIG. Released on highly collectible Brooklyn label What’s Your Rupture?, the title track is 18 minutes of pure fury and disgust.
The fury is for the meat industry and corporate hypocrisy. The disgust is ultimately for ourselves and our own lifestyles of excess and consumption. The pig at the trough, pushing aside his fellow-creatures in his greed for more food, will ultimately be food too.
This rather grim, if compelling, exegesis, is laid over a loping, menacing bass beat and a plaintive female vocal singing “Pigs at the trough show no fear” in a childlike, almost nursery-rhyme-ish introduction. Abruptly the trademark 3-guitar assault is unleashed, along with vocalist Pink Eyes’ bloodcurdling growl: “Pigs at the trough slit and squeal.”
This is not comforting music, but it is utterly engrossing and honest. It adds yet another layer when you realize that the song is about the treatment of sex workers in Canada. With this EP, FUCKED UP have broken out of the hardcore ghetto and rewritten the rules of the genre.

What you get is 100% sincere, aggressive yet melodic Bay Area California punk, drawing from regional bands of the past as well as those of Annie's past in Chicago-area Illinois, notably topped by Annie's raspy cigarettes-and-whiskey stained voice; falling somewhere between Joan Jett and the Avengers!

Brat Pack - Hate the Neighbours
Und Holland die Dritte...
If I didn't know better I would have thought this was a band from Cali in the early to mid eighties, right in the prime of American hardcore and punk rock. But no! No my friends! Brat Pack are from the Netherlands! Yeah, you heard me right. From the second I put this album on, the first track blew me away, I was pleasantly surprised with Sick Burn, and the rest of the songs continued to keep my attention. The lead vocals have a familiar sound that I can't put my finger on exactly, maybe familiar but not worn down. Back-up vocals have a good punk rock anthem effect. Everything seems to fall in place with this album, I really fuckin' dig this.

Antillectual - Testimony
ANTILLECTUAL is a punkrock trio from the Netherlands. Their music is melodic yet aggressive, their lyrics range from political to personal. The band releases its second album “Testimony” in March, 2008 through Fond Of Life Records. The highly anticipated second album “Testimony” features 10 songs ranging from blazing hardcore to melodic punkrock, accompanied by lyrics on politics, protest and personal feelings and supported by pounding drums and catchy guitar riffs.

Team Stray
With one foot in punk revival, another in old school Green Day imitation, and a third in modern day pop punk, Team Stray's sophomore full length "Gender Studies" seems to have three legs in total. Maybe that's why they stick out like a sore thumb from the meaningless gray cloud of pop punk bands these days. Because for all the many waves of pop punk acts (I've already lost count how many waves there are since Green Day's debut) there have been, how many bands are you able to name drop that sound even remotely like Green Day's mid 90s stuff, despite the all too big temptation of calling their songs some of the simplest music recorded in the last two decades? That's right, I didn't think so either, which leads me to conclude that either writing unfathomably catchy, relaxed punk rock is much more difficult to write than most people think, or that for some reason people just think Green Day is too cool of a band to rip off from (that is, before "American Idiot").
Not that Team Stray are exactly ripping off "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" or "Dookie" on "Gender Studies". They simply belong to the same wave of bands (over fifteen years later), with a pinch of Ramones / The Clash influence in their buzzing guitars and worry free two minute songs. They are silly at times, singing about sexual relations with past girlfriends ("Gender Studies"), or tongue-in-cheek about serious subjects as on "Mezzanine", where the band explores job interviews. And it's damn catchy, too, especially with the alternating male/female vocals in the song.
The reason Team Stray sound so awesomely fresh on "Gender Studies" is that although they are referencing major bands from the last three decades, they leave the last eight or so years largely untouched, allowing their brand of 1st wave pop punk/punk rock revival to flourish. There's just something so damn enjoyable about songs which possess no more than three or four chords overall, and completely lack the overly dramatic vocal delivery that so many other bands profess these days. You're lying if you will tell me you never enjoyed songs like "Welcome To Paradise" or "When I Come Around", so you have basically no excuse for not checking out Team Stray and "Gender Studies", for they are bringing the early 90s pop punk back with all three legs.

The Sainte Catherines - Dancing for Decadence
On The Art of Arrogance the Montreal act rocked like a No Idea band. The fact that they were releasing records though tiny Québécois labels was a mere technicality. The group was clearly in the class that followed How Water Music's revival of the rough voiced, road warrior punk band (although heavier), with an aesthetic borrowed from Midwestern bands like Dillinger Four (check the song titles). That the band became attached to Fat Wreck Chords was curious, particularly since they're not as immediately poppy as Fat acts tend to be (and I mean that in the nicest way possible to all parties), but with Dancing For Decadence it's not hard to see how they fit. While Arrogance sounded like Trapdoor Fucking Exit at times, it's not hard to compare Decadence to the Lawrence Arms.

CLEVELAND BOUND DEATH SENTENCE - Selftitled

Radon - We Bare All
Yes, it's true! After years of being "out in two weeks," the new 23-Song RADON CD is out NOW!! RADON was one of two bands* that helped turn around the Gainesville punk music scene in 1991, and blazed the trail for bands like HOT WATER MUSIC and LESS THAN JAKE a few years later! (*SPOKE being the other band!)
"We Bare All" includes the "Radon" 7", the "In Your Home" 7", compilation tracks, and a mess of live songs!

The Deal - Cut Throat
New Bruises - Transmit, Transmit
And once again Punknews.org:
Welcome Tampa, FL's New Bruises as the newest member to the extensive family of Hot Water Music followers (see: Latterman, Lock and Key, etc.). However, the influence is light here, as New Bruises certainly play a brand of emotion-tinged, mid-to-fast-paced punk rock, but provide the same type of upbeat positivity as Latterman musically, with lyrical themes tending to center around social commentary and personal growth.
What New Bruises does isn't the most original thing ever, but it's well done for what it is. There are plenty of well implemented choruses and inspired backup shouts. If not for slightly more professional sounding production, Transmit! Transmit! is an album you wouldn't be surprised to hear released on No Idea Records in any of the last few years, sitting aside well with releases from the likes of North Lincoln and Small Brown Bike. On a sidenote, some of the chorus of "Coffee With a Side of Confrontation, Please" sounds like H2O's more punk rock moments.
New Bruises' Transmit! Transmit! is a certainly promising debut. It's not exceptionally amazing, and could probably benefit from changing up the tempo once in a while and stretching the band's musical range, but it sounds honest, and at 35 minutes, is a perfect length for the style.

You Me And The Atom Bomb - Shake Up
Punknews.org:
It’s always really reassuring to listen to a band and feel as though their musical tastes have largely developed alongside your own. Now, I don’t know the members of You Me and the Atom Bomb, and I don’t know what CDs they pop in while touring in their van, but I have the feeling our record collections would overlap somewhat. Musical tastes change, and as of late there are a number of bands making music I wouldn’t have really been into seven years ago, is but all I want right now -- You Me and the Atom Bomb is one of those bands.
YMATAB’s debut album, Shake Up, is clearly a product of a band from Leatherface’s home country, and while they borrow somewhat from their fellow Britons in most regards, the band seems as though they would fit right in with Latterman, who they recently toured with (and got to sing back-up vocals on a few tracks), as well as the gruff, choppy, melodic sounds coming out of Gainesville. Apparently others agree, as they’ll be appearing at this year’s Fest V. Also mixed in there is some mid-`90s skatepunk -- think Satanic Surfers -- which gives the band a sound not too common in their scene.
While Shake Up lacks the kind of production that could highlight some of the band’s better vocal moments, of which there are many, it shines when it comes to presenting the group’s musicianship. Every instrument comes through with a great mix and the right dominance when necessary. What’s more is that the band is only a three-piece, and the variation of sounds coming through at times seems as though it would be coming from a larger ensemble.
Shake Up is a really good record that shows YMATAB have the potential to make their next one a great record.
While there might be a lot of bands making waves with sounds similar to You Me and the Atom Bomb, it remains largely an American sound despite obvious debts to Leatherface. Shake Up is a great addition to the sound from the other side of the ocean and it would be a shame if it were overlooked. Now if only I can get a ticket to Gainesville.

New Bruises - Goodbye Middle Class EP
Bin gerade ein wenig Schreibfaul, also müssen die Jungs und Mädels von Punknews noch mal ran:
With their full-length album Transmit Transmit, New Bruises seemed like they promised to be a wonderful followup (or replacement) to Latterman and the void they left. But New Bruises are much more than that, and this four-song followup to their debut full-length goes a long way in proving that the Tampa Bay group is much more than the latest band citing Gainesville as their Mecca.
Then again, there is no denying that the band is the product of Florida. There’s a lot of Hot Water Music, J-Church and even some Less Than Jake floating around in these songs.
The 7” kicks off with “Holding Pattern,” which doesn’t do a whole lot to sway people away from the “They sound too much like Latterman” camp, but fuck it, Latterman isn't making music anymore, and “Holding Pattern” is as catchy, melodic and rough around the edges as I want a song to be. The second side leads off with a song called, “God Bless You, Mr. Vonnegut (And So It Goes),” which, besides being a great tune in its own right, would have had my thumbs up anyhow. The 7” doesn’t change things up much, nor should it. The rest of the songs follow suit as vocalist Bryon Lippincott sings the band through fun, youthful and energetic songs that aren’t hesitant to sing about looking forward to brighter things.
New Bruises don’t need to prove themselves as standout artists in particular post-punk scene, but this 7” sure has gotten one reviewer excited for another full-length.

The Sidekicks - So Long, Soggy Dog
Punknews.org:
Cleveland, Ohio punk rockers, the Sidekicks are Brendan Kelly’s favorite band right now and Red Scare’s newest addition. To be honest, this was about as much solid information I could dig up on this young trio. But with Tin Armor and Ghost Town Trio listed in their top MySpace friends, I correctly anticipated a competent musical contribution.
After thoroughly taking in one complete spin of So Long, Soggy Dog, my first thought was, “I bet this would be a good band to see live.” While I have heard no show reviews concerning these performers, the straightforward, no-frills yet talented delivery of music can be easily envisioned to reproduce well onstage.
Most of the songs come off with the intensity and gruffness reminiscent of bands like Rivethead, Banner Pilot and Hot Water Music, while others have a more downtrodden ambiance similar to that of Gaslight Anthem or even Lucero.
Without having a lot of background information, I am not going to make any judgments on what I think is motivating this music. What I will tell you is that this is an album I am surprised to have not heard more about in its one month on the scene.
If you are a fan of any of the abovementioned “sounds like” bands, you definitely need to give the Sidekicks a listen. I have listened to this album multiple times and it is holding up well in my iPod rotation.
