Brainworms – Brainworms II: Swear to me

The sound that Virginia's Brainworms have become notorious for is definitely different. Early material was notable for short, explosive post-hardcore tracks that were marked by their extremely melodic guitars. 'Swear To Me' marks a distinct change for the band though, as the material here seems to be diving into much more eclectic territories. Brainworms have always embraced the style of hardcore that was made popular by groups like Split Lip and Grade. All of the group's discography bleeds of a melodic hardcore influence, but the fact is they hardly ever sound that clean or restrained. Whether it is punk, hardcore, or even indie rock, Brainworms are able to spew a dissonant yet catchy mix of numerous genres.
'Swear To Me' improves on Brainworms' former material by taking a more progressive approach. Blues style solos, group vocals, and various studio techniques are taken to make the sound more layered and diverse. For reference, think Bear vs. Shark's evolution from debut to sophomore release. The guitar attack of the group has been stepped up a notch and the addition of Josh Small layers the sound nicely. The odd fit in Brainworms has always been lead vocalist Greg Butler who physically resembles Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav fame. Butler's voice has a distinct distorted sound to it whether it is synthetic or natural. This really helps his voice contrast with very high frequency guitar and bass parts that the group likes to employ. Butler's lyrics also show themselves to be just as sophisticated as the song structures. His penchant for illustrating hardcore concepts in a personal way echoes other Virginia groups like Haram or Malady. His lyrics on 'Swear To Me' seem to be focusing on the various realities that accompany the term home, whether it is a person or place. Butler seems to be aching to find and define his own "home" and these thoughts seem to be a basis in the lyrical side of 'Swear To Me'. Of course the material strays into other realms whether it be the political 'Whatever, That's How You Get Famous' or the two instrumental tracks 'Vulgar Display of Flowers' and 'The Pinnacle of Story Telling.'

'Swear To Me' is a great record both because it is extremely enjoyable to listen to, while at the same time it helps carve out its own niche in post-hardcore. Fans of Bear vs. Shark, Hot Water Music, or a Dischord association would be wise to check out 'Swear To Me' - it really is a great and new sounding example of that sound.

The band was audibly influenced by the mid-nineties UK melodic hardcore scene and bands such as Hooton 3 Car and Broccoli, with less overt references to the noisier end of America's second-wave emo (early Get Up Kids, Small Brown Bike), and the oft-touted progenitors of gruff sounding punk rock, Leatherface.

Neun großartige rauhe erwachsene Punkrock-Hymnen der Ausnahmeband aus Finnland, hochmelodisch und toll arrangiert mit sozial- und politisch reflektierten Lyrics; neben Hüsker Dü, Replacements und Leatherface standen wohl auch Turbostaat Pate!! Zuerst fällt auf dass die Gitarren weniger nach Wall-of-Sound klingen, sondern einen cleaneren Sound haben, was aber aufgrund der atemlosen und catchigen Songs bestens passt, und die filigranen Riffs viel geiler zur Geltung bringen lässt. Auch am Gesang wurde gefeilt, die Stimme klar unverkennbar, aber die Songs sind noch nen Tick ausgereifter und knackiger, einfach noch direkter auf den Punkt!!!

Lock And Key - Selftitled

The boys from Boston’s Lock And Key are back again but this time it is a bittersweet listen. Unfortunately, this self-titled affair is the band’s swan song. Lock And Key made the decision to call it quits last year but lucky for us that they deemed it necessary to document their final songs. Lock And Key play emotional post-hardcore in the vein of Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike and Leatherface. Yeah, I know, we have all heard this sound played many times before. However, Lock And Key have always been a cut above the rest in regards to moving beyond their influences. The band’s material can often go toe to toe against those heavyweights. That certainly speaks volumes but it is the band’s sincerity and passion that carries the heavier stick. That continues here on their final release as Lock And Key let it all hang out. You can hear the emotion bleeding out from the speakers. The album is a unique listening experience as it seems as though many of these songs were written with the band’s demise already etched in stone. Much of the album touches on the trials and tribulations of a band simply trying to keep their head above water. Lock And Key are fighting to keep going and stay positive while battling negativity and frustration. It is a rare look into the true heart of a DIY band trying to carry on despite overwhelming odds. In the end, the band decided to hang it up and move on. Take nothing away from Lock And Key. They can walk away with their heads held high. On “Last Song” Lock And Key shout out exactly what I would expect. Never forget, never regret. Always in debt to all of you. Cheers Lock And Key, it was a fantastic ride!

The dual vocals, trading off between melodic singing and gruff shouting, blend perfectly. The majority of the songs on Kodiak are anthemic, and condusive to a style that is clearly the band's own.

Pull Up The Floorboards is post-hardcore that way it should be: raw, abrasive, urgent and always on the brink of panic...delivered with uncompromising conviction and gut-wrenching ferocity. An emotional overload of the highest order, Lock And Key play with furious guitars that smolder, crackle and chug behind the razor-cut signature vocals of Ryan Shanahan. Buried beneath the thick slabs of combustible guitars and machine-gun drumming are irresistible hooks that dig deep. There's a restless energy that permeates Floorboards, a sort of shadowy unease and distemper like the first warning signs of a nervous breakdown. It's a dangerous precipice for a band, walking the delicate line between thoughtful articulation and the frenzy of incoherent desperation. But unlike many of their peers who deliver marginally at best, Lock And Key have composed a startling achievement of brain, brawn, pathos and, most importantly, heart.

Fucked Up - Year Of The Pig

Toronto’s FUCKED UP tore asunder the bonds of hardcore punk with last year’s limited-edition 12” YEAR OF THE PIG. Released on highly collectible Brooklyn label What’s Your Rupture?, the title track is 18 minutes of pure fury and disgust.

The fury is for the meat industry and corporate hypocrisy. The disgust is ultimately for ourselves and our own lifestyles of excess and consumption. The pig at the trough, pushing aside his fellow-creatures in his greed for more food, will ultimately be food too.

This rather grim, if compelling, exegesis, is laid over a loping, menacing bass beat and a plaintive female vocal singing “Pigs at the trough show no fear” in a childlike, almost nursery-rhyme-ish introduction. Abruptly the trademark 3-guitar assault is unleashed, along with vocalist Pink Eyes’ bloodcurdling growl: “Pigs at the trough slit and squeal.”

This is not comforting music, but it is utterly engrossing and honest. It adds yet another layer when you realize that the song is about the treatment of sex workers in Canada. With this EP, FUCKED UP have broken out of the hardcore ghetto and rewritten the rules of the genre.
