New Bruises - Transmit, Transmit

Welcome Tampa, FL's New Bruises as the newest member to the extensive family of Hot Water Music followers (see: Latterman, Lock and Key, etc.). However, the influence is light here, as New Bruises certainly play a brand of emotion-tinged, mid-to-fast-paced punk rock, but provide the same type of upbeat positivity as Latterman musically, with lyrical themes tending to center around social commentary and personal growth.

What New Bruises does isn't the most original thing ever, but it's well done for what it is. There are plenty of well implemented choruses and inspired backup shouts. If not for slightly more professional sounding production, Transmit! Transmit! is an album you wouldn't be surprised to hear released on No Idea Records in any of the last few years, sitting aside well with releases from the likes of North Lincoln and Small Brown Bike. On a sidenote, some of the chorus of "Coffee With a Side of Confrontation, Please" sounds like H2O's more punk rock moments.

New Bruises' Transmit! Transmit! is a certainly promising debut. It's not exceptionally amazing, and could probably benefit from changing up the tempo once in a while and stretching the band's musical range, but it sounds honest, and at 35 minutes, is a perfect length for the style.

You Me And The Atom Bomb - Shake Up

It’s always really reassuring to listen to a band and feel as though their musical tastes have largely developed alongside your own. Now, I don’t know the members of You Me and the Atom Bomb, and I don’t know what CDs they pop in while touring in their van, but I have the feeling our record collections would overlap somewhat. Musical tastes change, and as of late there are a number of bands making music I wouldn’t have really been into seven years ago, is but all I want right now -- You Me and the Atom Bomb is one of those bands.

YMATAB’s debut album, Shake Up, is clearly a product of a band from Leatherface’s home country, and while they borrow somewhat from their fellow Britons in most regards, the band seems as though they would fit right in with Latterman, who they recently toured with (and got to sing back-up vocals on a few tracks), as well as the gruff, choppy, melodic sounds coming out of Gainesville. Apparently others agree, as they’ll be appearing at this year’s Fest V. Also mixed in there is some mid-`90s skatepunk -- think Satanic Surfers -- which gives the band a sound not too common in their scene.

While Shake Up lacks the kind of production that could highlight some of the band’s better vocal moments, of which there are many, it shines when it comes to presenting the group’s musicianship. Every instrument comes through with a great mix and the right dominance when necessary. What’s more is that the band is only a three-piece, and the variation of sounds coming through at times seems as though it would be coming from a larger ensemble.

Shake Up is a really good record that shows YMATAB have the potential to make their next one a great record.

While there might be a lot of bands making waves with sounds similar to You Me and the Atom Bomb, it remains largely an American sound despite obvious debts to Leatherface. Shake Up is a great addition to the sound from the other side of the ocean and it would be a shame if it were overlooked. Now if only I can get a ticket to Gainesville.

New Bruises - Goodbye Middle Class EP

With their full-length album Transmit Transmit, New Bruises seemed like they promised to be a wonderful followup (or replacement) to Latterman and the void they left. But New Bruises are much more than that, and this four-song followup to their debut full-length goes a long way in proving that the Tampa Bay group is much more than the latest band citing Gainesville as their Mecca.

Then again, there is no denying that the band is the product of Florida. There’s a lot of Hot Water Music, J-Church and even some Less Than Jake floating around in these songs.

The 7” kicks off with “Holding Pattern,” which doesn’t do a whole lot to sway people away from the “They sound too much like Latterman” camp, but fuck it, Latterman isn't making music anymore, and “Holding Pattern” is as catchy, melodic and rough around the edges as I want a song to be. The second side leads off with a song called, “God Bless You, Mr. Vonnegut (And So It Goes),” which, besides being a great tune in its own right, would have had my thumbs up anyhow. The 7” doesn’t change things up much, nor should it. The rest of the songs follow suit as vocalist Bryon Lippincott sings the band through fun, youthful and energetic songs that aren’t hesitant to sing about looking forward to brighter things.

New Bruises don’t need to prove themselves as standout artists in particular post-punk scene, but this 7” sure has gotten one reviewer excited for another full-length.

The Sidekicks - So Long, Soggy Dog

Cleveland, Ohio punk rockers, the Sidekicks are Brendan Kelly’s favorite band right now and Red Scare’s newest addition. To be honest, this was about as much solid information I could dig up on this young trio. But with Tin Armor and Ghost Town Trio listed in their top MySpace friends, I correctly anticipated a competent musical contribution.

After thoroughly taking in one complete spin of So Long, Soggy Dog, my first thought was, “I bet this would be a good band to see live.” While I have heard no show reviews concerning these performers, the straightforward, no-frills yet talented delivery of music can be easily envisioned to reproduce well onstage.

Most of the songs come off with the intensity and gruffness reminiscent of bands like Rivethead, Banner Pilot and Hot Water Music, while others have a more downtrodden ambiance similar to that of Gaslight Anthem or even Lucero.

Without having a lot of background information, I am not going to make any judgments on what I think is motivating this music. What I will tell you is that this is an album I am surprised to have not heard more about in its one month on the scene.

If you are a fan of any of the abovementioned “sounds like” bands, you definitely need to give the Sidekicks a listen. I have listened to this album multiple times and it is holding up well in my iPod rotation.

Bananas - New Animals

On their fourth album, the Bananas haven’t really changed much. They are still playing fast, lo-fi pop punk. Yet, New Animals is refreshing in the sense that it’s incredibly energetic and gives off the feeling that the three band members are having almost too much fun playing these songs. This also happens to be the best album these guys have released so far.

The album opens up with “Gentrification for Dummies,” and it definitely sets the mood for the rest of the album. The song is very fun (well, as fun as gentrification can be) and probably one of the best songs on the album. The next track, “New Animals” is definitely one of the more hyper as well as the catchiest of the 14 songs. Some songs such as “Time Bandits” and “Things Will Get Worse” read like a song Off with Their Heads might write, but the delivery is a little faster and delivered without the lament or deprecation that might drag this particular album down.

The album keeps up with its lo-fi fury, blasting through highlights such as “Tomorrow,” “Jus’ Folks” and the almost addictive “Radioaction.” The album keeps the pace, only slowing down for the eclectic “National Anthem,” the album's longest song, then wraps things up with “Roly Poly.” This song ends the album perfectly as it brings the energy back up with ease and ends in bittersweet manner.

Unfortunately, this album went pretty unnoticed and underappreciated during 2008. Hopefully, you all can make up for that in 2009. So in between listening to your copies of Ghosts and Scrambles, give this album a listen. I’m sure it would fit nicely in between the two.

Da ich immer noch bei meiner Freundin bin, hab ich mal auf ihrer Festplatte nach guter Musik gesucht und sogar was gefunden: Sixer!!! Als Bonus zum Album hab ich noch den spitzen non Album Track Thin white line dazu gepackt...

Social Distortion and the Clash are, hands down, two of the greatest punk bands of any era. Combining the sounds of the two runs the risk of sounding either derivative and unoriginal or sounding… well… like Sixer.
The ex-Ann Beretta members (and company) wear their influences on their sleeves, channeling similar sounds of the Swinging Utters, early Dropkick Murphys and “…Wolves” era Rancid to craft an album of catchy punk rock & roll. The opening track “Unusual” chugs along with a rhythm reminiscent of Green Day’s “Hitching A Ride” only to explode into a driving chorus that cements the band’s style as their own. “Truckstop Jesus” follows, a powerful rock song playing like “White Light…” era Social D’. The real gem of the album however is “Hero,” which displays the best of the band’s songwriting, no-nonsense lyrics and flawless incorporation of their influences. The equally catchy “American Heartbreak” plays out like a great Clash tune, with smart, well-crafted verses and an utterly infectious chorus. ….
Thematically the band hits on a lot of drinking songs and southern rock influences. In a few rare occurrences this may weaken the songs (the chorus to “RS3” isn’t exactly Shakespeare), but at other times other times the band manages to mesh so completely, as in the awesome “Furious & Outdone,” that all flaws are forgotten. The album closes on a high-note with “Tired Of Waiting,” which builds on a ridiculously catchy shout along chorus into one of the most memorable songs I’ve heard this year.
Sixer have hold of a style and energy that’s sorely missing from so many bands today. It’s a recognition that rock & roll has much deeper roots than many young bands choose to tap. They aren’t the most original group out there, but their music will prove to have more longevity…
