Manifesto Jukebox - Strain
Neun großartige rauhe erwachsene Punkrock-Hymnen der Ausnahmeband aus Finnland, hochmelodisch und toll arrangiert mit sozial- und politisch reflektierten Lyrics; neben Hüsker Dü, Replacements und Leatherface standen wohl auch Turbostaat Pate!! Zuerst fällt auf dass die Gitarren weniger nach Wall-of-Sound klingen, sondern einen cleaneren Sound haben, was aber aufgrund der atemlosen und catchigen Songs bestens passt, und die filigranen Riffs viel geiler zur Geltung bringen lässt. Auch am Gesang wurde gefeilt, die Stimme klar unverkennbar, aber die Songs sind noch nen Tick ausgereifter und knackiger, einfach noch direkter auf den Punkt!!!

Lock And Key - Selftitled
The boys from Boston’s Lock And Key are back again but this time it is a bittersweet listen. Unfortunately, this self-titled affair is the band’s swan song. Lock And Key made the decision to call it quits last year but lucky for us that they deemed it necessary to document their final songs. Lock And Key play emotional post-hardcore in the vein of Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike and Leatherface. Yeah, I know, we have all heard this sound played many times before. However, Lock And Key have always been a cut above the rest in regards to moving beyond their influences. The band’s material can often go toe to toe against those heavyweights. That certainly speaks volumes but it is the band’s sincerity and passion that carries the heavier stick. That continues here on their final release as Lock And Key let it all hang out. You can hear the emotion bleeding out from the speakers. The album is a unique listening experience as it seems as though many of these songs were written with the band’s demise already etched in stone. Much of the album touches on the trials and tribulations of a band simply trying to keep their head above water. Lock And Key are fighting to keep going and stay positive while battling negativity and frustration. It is a rare look into the true heart of a DIY band trying to carry on despite overwhelming odds. In the end, the band decided to hang it up and move on. Take nothing away from Lock And Key. They can walk away with their heads held high. On “Last Song” Lock And Key shout out exactly what I would expect. Never forget, never regret. Always in debt to all of you. Cheers Lock And Key, it was a fantastic ride!

STN are a great band. They write memorable songs, with catchy hooks, and well-arranged choruses and song structures. The dual vocals, trading off between melodic singing and gruff shouting, blend perfectly. The majority of the songs on Kodiak are anthemic, and condusive to a style that is clearly the band's own.

LOCK AND KEY - Pull Up The Floorboards
Pull Up The Floorboards is post-hardcore that way it should be: raw, abrasive, urgent and always on the brink of panic...delivered with uncompromising conviction and gut-wrenching ferocity. An emotional overload of the highest order, Lock And Key play with furious guitars that smolder, crackle and chug behind the razor-cut signature vocals of Ryan Shanahan. Buried beneath the thick slabs of combustible guitars and machine-gun drumming are irresistible hooks that dig deep. There's a restless energy that permeates Floorboards, a sort of shadowy unease and distemper like the first warning signs of a nervous breakdown. It's a dangerous precipice for a band, walking the delicate line between thoughtful articulation and the frenzy of incoherent desperation. But unlike many of their peers who deliver marginally at best, Lock And Key have composed a startling achievement of brain, brawn, pathos and, most importantly, heart.

Tiltwheel - Hair Brained Scheme Addicts

Let me say it again. God damn.
This is punk rock done right.
Let me set the stage for you. A shimmering sample of "Old Yeller" gives way to a light, sparse guitar intro. Then the guitar schreeches, the snare drum hits, and all the instruments rocket in. You hear Davey's guttural yelp of "A family of five I saw burn alive/And all that's left is the blood on the highway" and every band member rocking out to the max. Around this point your head implodes from expiriencing nearly unprecedented amounts of rockage. It's colossal.
I have to admit, I didn't see this coming from a long way. Tiltwheel's earlier 7"s and splits were... well, only slightly above average at best. I mean, they weren't bad, just not something that you'd go out of your way to own. However, we here see almost unrivaled passion and intensity. This is a vital album, too important not to be heard by the punx.
Influences and comparisons are hard to pick out. Generally, the music is punk rock by way of The Broadways, Jawbreaker (but if the former had song structure and heavier than the latter) and the like, but is in a category all of it's own. These are ten very original songs. Even the cover, "Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)" (originally by Icicle Works) sounds totally fresh and new, and lyrically it falls into the same vein as Tiltwheel. In the opening of "Al Quint Is An Emo Pussy", whats this? A beautiful piano introduction over guitar feedback! This album manages to be hard rocking and devoid of any and all pretention yet still have an arty quality to it. This is something that very few modern bands have achieved.
Why don't more bands have the ability to combine catchy, happy-sounding music with depressing lyrics? It works so well and seems so simple in theory, yet Tiltwheel is one of the few bands that can pull it off. Just a few of the topics covered here are remorse ("Song That Used To Be Called Aaron's Song") drinking ("All I Care About Is Me, My Rum and You") and being remorseful about drinking ("2:07 AM"). At first a glance at the lyric sheet may remind you of a cookie-cutter emo band, but Davey's gruff, catharsisy, Gunmoll-esque voice truly breathes life into the words.
Davey's life depends on music; be it creating music or listening to that created by others, and this shines throughly with crystal clarity on this record unlike anything Tiltwheel has done. If you get to see them live, there is so much sadness and passion behind every chord that its like his heart is connected directly to his amplefier.
I cannot emphasize enough how excellent this album is. There are very few other bands I have ever been this excited about. The record has been glued to my turntable since it first arrived in the mail a month ago.

Druglords Of The Avenues - Sing Songs
God bless the Swingin’ Utters and all the ten-thousand branches of their musical family tree. The level of consistent quality not only ensures a worthwhile purchase, but effectively renders obsolete any excuses or attempts to justify illegal downloading “just to make sure it’s good.” Because whenever Swingin’ Utters-related music comes out, you know damn well it’s gonna be good.
Long-time Utters frontman Johnny Bonnel also fronts Druglords of the Avenues, the Northern California ensemble that self-released their debut and nearly watched it sell out before Red Scare Industries came to the rescue, bringing Sing Songs wider distribution and the attention it deserves while preserving the enthralling artwork done by Bonnel himself.
Backed by members of Knuckle Up, Moonshine, Butterface and Hot Heresy, Druglords of the Avenues represents the complete other side of the spectrum from Bonnel’s Filthy Thieving Bastards whereas Swingin’ Utters meets halfway between. That is to say that if there was a Venn Diagram for visual aid, Filthy Thieving Bastards would be the right circle with their blend of mostly punked-up country and folk, Swingin’ Utters would be in the middle blending country, folk, ska and street punk amongst other styles, and Druglords of the Avenues would be on the far left spitting out nothing but raw, unadulterated street punk.
But it’s still classy, mind you. Bonnel has one of the most articulate mouths in punk, and doesn’t shy away from esoterically poetic storytelling even while howling out to grubby, working-class jams. Arcane opener “Me Decided” sounds like a cross between the whimsical tirades of a salty seafarer and graphic sexual accounts told through quasi-colloquial innuendo: “Me feel so strongly that me gave inside your cave / Be still so calmly catch me make upside your cake / Me chill salami watch me wait outside your gate / Me saw a vessel that me rode inside a cove / Me draw a pistol that me tote inside me coat / Me was a fistful watch me float inside your boat." The song is catchy and upbeat, as are those surrounding it and at its opposite end, rounding out the album with a fantastic hidden cover of an influential Twin Cities punk band and “So Called Druglords,” which finds Bonnel pitching a suggestion to “listen to Crimpshrine.” “He Loves” follows “Me Decided,” anchored with a pleasant guitar hook that makes the verses more memorable than the chorus.
The artist-track “Druglords of the Avenues” is the album’s catchiest but nearly ruined by a perfunctory throng of “Hey!”s that sounds like a tiny, miniature Oi!-boy being pounded over the head with a rubber mallet. It eventually becomes tolerable, and perhaps even welcomed, but not without some getting used to. The fourth track “Stalling Breed” is the temporary finale of the record’s more pop-oriented tunes as a harder-edged street punk style emerges for dominion of the interior. “What Is Good,” “So Mixed Up” and the ruthlessly a-melodic “Search Again” are straightforward lyrically and musically, and provide a better soundtrack for slapping a heavy bag than singing in the shower.
Sing Songs is punk’s perfect paradox; the debut of this veteran assembly is artistic and utilitarian, witty and forthright, of poetry and prose. Whether expressed through a capricious chorus or an uninhibited yell, Druglords of the Avenues tell their stories with sophistication and zeal and the salivary projection of a street punk band armed with the aptitude to match.

Dead Mechanical - Medium Noise
This gem hasn't left my cd player since I got it. I keep hearing people making Jawbreaker comparisons, but Dead Mechanical have more in common musically with early Stiff Little Fingers (I can't help but think of "Suspect Device" when I hear that guitar riff in the excellent ironicall-to-arms "Guantanamo Calling") and the like. Jangly, pointy guitar work, rumbling bass, and tight-as-churchshoes drumming blessed by turntaking singers. Lucas Carscadden (guitar) sings on most of the record, and his abrasive yelling-even-when-whispering voice suits the music perfectly. But as much as I like his songs, it's the few sung by drummer Matt Dorsey that I keep repeating once or twice before moving on to the next track. His voice reminds me of early Jazz June singles from back when emo wasn't a store at the mall. You just can't listen to a song like "Messy Apartment" or "Information In" and not be singing the chorus for the rest of the day. Everything about this disc fits...the dirty-loud production, the lyrics, even the artwork. Don't walk, run!!!

One for the Team - Build It Up
Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass ich kein großer Fan von Indie Gitarren-Pop bin, dementsprechend skeptisch war ich, als Alex von Rock This Town mir diese CD zum besprechen in die Hand drückte.
Doch kaum rotierte Build It Up in meinem CD Player, hatte es mich auch schon in seinen Bann geschlagen...
Hier treffen extrem eingängige Melodien auf Gitarren die punkig genug sind, um die Songs niemals in die Belanglosigkeit des Mainstreampops abrutschen zu lassen. Und genau dort liegt die Stärke dieses Albums. Den trotz des männlich/weiblichen Wechselgesangs, der zuckersüßen Melodien und des hohen Wohlfühlfaktors schaffen es die Songs noch genug DIY Bodenständigkeit zu bewahren um mein kleines Punkerherz vor Freude hüpfen zu lassen. Just in dem Moment als ich mir diesen tollen Satz ausdenke wirft meine Feundin "Weakerthans" in den Raum. Hmm, stimmt! Da hätte ich auch selber drauf kommen können...
Um beim namedropping zu bleiben: "Its heavy guitars and solid vocal delivery make it a standout, redolent of Tegan and Sara with, quite literally, more balls." Diesen Vergleich aus einem anderem Review fand ich nicht nur ganz lustig, sondern auch ( zumindestens manchmal) passend
Was noch zu sagen bleibt ist, dass die lyrics gar nicht mal so dumm sind und dass One For The Team aus Minneapolis kommen. Und mal ehrlich fällt euch auf Anhieb ne schlechte Band aus der Heimat von Dillinger Four und den mächtigen Replacements ein???

The Measure [SA] - Songs About People...and Fruit 'n Shit
I've ignored the Measure's playful pop-punk for far too long. Lauren Measure's vocals always gave me this idea that the band somehow adapted the Plan-It-X sound to a full-on, inspired pop-punk sound, but one I couldn't really get into for whatever reason. Not like intentionally or whatever, but it's just how it sounded to me. Anyway, point being, Songs About People...and Fruit 'n Shit is a pretty bang-up job. I swear I'm not suddenly giving a shit because Mikey Erg is an official member.
The songs on Fruit 'n Shit simply sound more realized than the band ever really has. "Drunk by Noon" begins with an understated riff and Lauren giving a sort of emphasized murmur over the rolling action, with a full-on chorus that hits home hard. "Revisionist" delivers a great jolt of energy in the early goings while the minimalism and acoustic/electric dual approach of "How to Steal a Million" makes it a great centerpiece.
I'm not quite as stoked on the flipside of the record (though the melodic, rambled refrains of "Hello Bastards" are sweet), but this is still a generously packaged release with a lot of clear effort and care put in.

The songs on Fruit 'n Shit simply sound more realized than the band ever really has. "Drunk by Noon" begins with an understated riff and Lauren giving a sort of emphasized murmur over the rolling action, with a full-on chorus that hits home hard. "Revisionist" delivers a great jolt of energy in the early goings while the minimalism and acoustic/electric dual approach of "How to Steal a Million" makes it a great centerpiece.

Good Luck - Into Lake Griffy
Good Luck start their debut with "How to Live Here," a song that sets the tone for the whole album: It's fast without being aggressive, melancholy without being navel gazing, positive without being a put-on. It also makes you feel like it's 90 degrees outside and you've got no choice but to sweat it out. As the band continues, you begin to get the equation of the band: It's equal parts noodly, clean guitars with punchy basslines and jazzy drum fills. It meshes together very well, creating a very unique sound that almost asks for comparisons to bands like the Weakerthans in their early years.
POLICE AND THIEVES - AMOR Y GUERRA
DC's POLICE & THIEVES return with their second EP and debut for Youngblood. Featuring members of Youngblood alumnus WORN THIN, as well as members of BALBOA and BLEEDER RESISTOR, they carry on the tradition of melodic hardcore that DC put on the map. These four songs offer incredibly energetic and well played hardcore in the vein of VERBAL ASSAULT or DAG NASTY.

The Knockdown – Test/Retest
The Knockdown started as a group of friends attending the State University at Oneonta who shared the twin passions of partying and punk rock. After releasing a demo and playing some shows, the Knockdown finally come out with their first full length record. The finer points of this record are the mixture of Northern Hardcore and Floridian Punk sounds. At times
Hot Water Music-esque, with catchy guitar work over a Latterman sing-along punk sound.

Architects - Vice
These meat-and-potatoes Missourians spend their third album returning to the scene of the crime: murders on the Jersey Shore, outlaws in Oklahoma, Salinas jailbirds' daughters on the lam, MILFs seducing future MFAs in Orange County. They wear black and carry guns like Dad did, but so do the crooked cops. Their riffs aim for Angus Young as their shouting shoots for BTO and the Clash and Hüsker Dü. And if the vocals are mixed too low to keep the choruses consistently rousing, energy and emotion buoy the barrage regardless.

Punk played with a country twang, or country played with punk ferocity.
Either way, they do a good job of it. Tuneful, driving, and solid.
These guys really hit their stride mid way through this disc with songs
like “Pick Axe,” “Prom Night at the Burn Clinic,” and the piano-driven
“Oh, The Places You’ll Stay.” A lot of broken hearts and alcohol
consumption going on, along with some soul searching.
